The United States Patent and Trademark Office has approved the University of Iowa’s application for federal trademark registration of our primary block IOWA logo. Federal registration gives the university legal protection on our primary identifier, furthering our efforts to protect the brand and prevent infringement under U.S. Trademark laws.
Moving forward, the federal trademark registration symbol ®️ will be required to appear with the block IOWA logo on all promotional merchandise and apparel. This includes official lockups, affinity lockups, and student organization and sport club badges. The university will begin transitioning files and make updated logo assets available by July 1, 2023.
The University Licensing and Trademark Office will begin requiring licensees to use the registration symbol as new orders are reviewed. Items held in inventory with the trademark symbol TM may continue to be used and transitioning to the registration symbol can be done as your supplies are replenished.
